The Holly Tree

Among the pitiable convict people landed from the ship Neptune was Sarah, wife of Robert Evans of St. George. She had been indicted and convicted of Grand Larceny at the Denbighshire Quarter Sessions in July 1786 and sentenced to be transported for a term of seven years.

At her trial in Denbigh, Peter Jones of Talwgrwn stated that he had laid a quantity of linen yarn out in his field during the evening but that it had disappeared by the next morning. Suspicion fell upon Sarah Evans as Elizabeth, the wife of Peter Jones, stated that she had in the past missed several things from her home after the accused had been seen in the vicinity.

The linen yarn was later found by Peter Jones and John Jones hidden beneath a holly tree near Kinmel.
