Nant Clwyd House, Ruthin

Details of the Excursion

This house is the oldest known timbered one in Wales, dating from 1435.

It is timbered framed with "wattle and daub" infill. Slate roofing and leaded light windows were a later addition and it has had several alterations and an additional new wing appended to the rear of the original building in the 1600’s. The interior has been restored to its original condition as far as possible and the back garden has had a complete restoration.

This house was shown as part of Phil Ebbrell’s Annual Lecture earlier this year We shall also visit, very briefly, the medieval house known as "Rose Cottage", a cruck-framed thatched cottage dated about 1550. As it is privately owned and occupied, we cannot see the interior.
