Cae’r Gors, the home of Dr Kate Roberts
Details of the Excursion
Cae’r Gors is the recently opened home of Dr Kate Roberts, the very controversial Welsh novelist, regarded as the “Queen of Welsh Literature.” The cottage has been restored to its condition when Dr Kate lived there with her quarryman father and mother in the early 1900’s. A video (bilingual) shows the conditions families lived in and the hardships they endured.
However, with some persuasion and encouragement she received a good education and some years later she returned to North Wales to give us the benefit of what she had learned and how she expected us to respond to it!
National Slate Museum, Llanberis
We will also visit the Slate Museum at Llanberis to see how the quarrymen of that period earned their livelihood and to hear (by video) about their working conditions.
This is coupled with the visit to Dr Kate Roberts’ house as most of her well known novels are connected to this era and area.
As we will be visiting Llanberis first, we will have time for a lunch stop at the Museum. There is a snack bar, offering hot drinks and light refreshments.
