Rhuddlan Castle

Rhuddlan Castle

Historical Background

Rhuddlan first appeared in recorded history in the last years of the eighth century. In 1065 it was the royal seat of Gruffydd ap Llywelyn.

Its historical importance is still reflected in its Parliament Street. Rhuddlan Castle is one of the C13th castles built in North Wales by Edward I.

Twthill is an earthen mound close to the Castle, traditionally occupying the site of Grufydd ap Llywelyn’s Palace.

Most of us will have seen it from a distance: now is the chance to visit "one of the ruins that Cromwell knocked about a bit".

Excursion Arrangements

A coach will not be provided due to the high cost for the short journey. Members with cars are requested to take those without transport. (See reply slip)

At 1.45pm a town guide will meet us in the car park of the Library in Vicarage Lane, Rhuddlan (first left after the mini roundabout) for a tour of the town ending at the castle, where she or another guide will take us round.

Tea/coffee and scones are available after the tour at the Kings Head at a cost of £2.50 per person. If required please indicate on the reply slip in order that we may forewarn the hotel.

Flat walking shoes are recommended.
